What formats does Hive support?

Images

PNG, JPG/JPEG, GIF, WebP, HEIC, BMP, TIFF, AVIF, SVG, ICO and ICNS, JPEG XL, and RAW files in .dng. Animated GIF and animated WebP play in place, and you can pause an animation, scrub through it, or change its speed. Live Photos import as Live Photos and keep their motion.

Video

MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, and WebM. While a video plays you can change the playback speed, step through it frame by frame on the timeline, double-tap either side to jump back or forward, and save the current frame as an image.

Audio

MP3, M4A, AAC, FLAC, WAV, AIF/AIFF, and ALAC. The audio player shows a waveform, lets you jump 15 seconds in either direction, and keeps playing when Hive is in the background.

Documents and links

PDFs open in a reader with an outline view and page modes. Links are saved with the page they came from. HTML files can be imported and previewed, and text documents can be written and edited inside Hive with Markdown for headings, lists, bold text, and links.

Design files and 3D models

PSD and Procreate files import and preview. 3D models in .stl, .obj, .usd, .usdz, .abc, .dae, .scn, and .glb can be previewed in AR, which helps when you want to judge a shape at real size.

If a file won't open

First check that Hive is up to date, since formats are added in updates. If the library is in iCloud Drive, make sure the file has finished downloading. If it still won't open, use the feedback button in Hive and include the file's details.
